Default Ever seen a huge wave?

Have you ever seen one of the m***ive waves that Hawaii is famous for?
I went to Waimea Bay one November expecting a HUGE swell as they usually get there - the water was as flat as a tack!
I was greatly disappointed that day

I saw mid sized waves at sunset beach
They might not have been huge but you could tell there was force behind them, alot more than at a normal beach.
Normally i am confident with waves but i felt these ones were too heavy for me.

Default Waves

Hawaii is famous for it's waves. The only problem is the swells are more fickle than in other spots in the world. Central America, and Northern California are more likely to get waves more regularly with size. Hawaii is famous for it's big waves primarily because When the large swells come in, it's winter time. When Big Wave surfing made it's debut mid last century, the best place to surf was Hawaii cause it was warm.

Don't get me wrong, Hawaii has great big waves. It's just you have to wait for the right swells. Also, many spots don't even break till the swell hits 10-15 feet. This way there could be a huge swell, but at certain spots, it may not be big enough to show a ripple.

If you really want to see those waves, go to the North Shore of any island in the winter, make sure there's a swell coming, and ask a local surfer where it'll be biggest to watch. You'll be amazed at what some guys and girls are willing to drop in on.
