Default Decline of Pineapple Industry?

I was just reading the first thread and it says that the pineapple industry was phased out on the island. I'm wondering how that could possibly happen. Don't pineapples grow on trees? They keep growing and growing and bearing fruit until someone cuts them down, right? So how could the industry die out unless someone cut down all the trees. (Tell me no one did this.)

doesnt mean the pineapples arent still growing there.
It just means they probably arent exporting them like they used to.

Default Pineapples

Pineapples actually grow from the ground. There are no trees.

Pineapples are slowing stopping on all islands. I think because the land is so expensive and we get produce sometimes cheaper from central and south America. I've actually bought fruit in Maui from these places.

Oddly enough, many pineapples sold on Maui are first shipped to the mainland for redistribution. Some how, through economy of scale, this works out as cheaper for them.

Oh I didn't know that! This is a really strange way of going about selling them - well I guess there must be some reason for them doing it.
I love the Hawaiian pineapples, they are actually one of my favourite fruit!

Wow! That's amazing! I never would have thought that.
